From new flooring to updated technology, several elementary schools welcomed students this year with renovated and refreshed spaces all throughout their buildings. The renovation work was part of the first phase of the district’s Facilities Master Plan.

The newest members at several Westerville City Schools elementaries have spent the past week starting to build relationships in their school communities.

The Westerville City School District Board of Education on Monday, July 8, 2024, voted unanimously to request additional funding for facilities and operations by placing a combined levy and bond issue on the Nov. 5 ballot. 

The Westerville City Schools’ new Strategic Plan serves as a road map to guide and prioritize the district’s most critical work in the coming years.

Parents and caregivers planning to attend Westerville City School District’s upcoming Parent Prep workshop series no longer have to register for sessions in advance. During the workshop events on Feb. 10 at Minerva Park Middle School and March 9 at Westerville Central High School, attendees can create their own schedule, whether it’s attending one session or five.

Newly-elected board member Louise Valentine and re-elected board member Jennifer Aultman were sworn into office of the Westerville City Schools Board of Education at an organizational/regular meeting on Jan. 8. 

During the Westerville City Schools Board of Education organizational meeting on Jan. 8, Kristy Meyer was elected president while Jennifer Aultman was elected vice president.

The Board of Education also approved the 2024 meeting calendar.

Students in six Westerville schools received top honors in the 2023-24 WCSD PTA Reflections award program, which recognizes student achievement in literature, music, dance, film production, photography, music composition and visual arts. Students who earned first place awards will move on to the state competition.

Westerville families are invited to the Westerville Parent Council’s second annual card tournament from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at Westerville North High School.

As part of the Westerville City School District’s Parent Prep workshop series, parents and caregivers can take sessions on a variety of topics including mindful parenting, digital safety, conflict resolution, substance education and college and career readiness. 

Starting Tuesday, Jan. 9, Westerville students, staff and community members can nominate district staff and adult volunteers for a Great Educator Mentor (GEM) Award, which is presented to individuals who go the extra mile to make a positive impact in the classroom and schools.

Parents or guardians wishing to apply to have their children attend a school different from their school of attendance must complete and submit an Intra-district Open Enrollment Application.

David Harchar, an adapted physical education teacher for the district, and Beth Mulik, media clerk and library aide at Hanby and Hawthorne elementaries, have been recognized by the Westerville Sunrise Rotary for going above and beyond to serve students.

The Columbus Symphony is currently accepting online nominations for its annual Music Educator Awards, honoring individuals making a difference in our community through their dedication to music education and efforts to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for music education. Four awards will be given to exemplary music educators in the categories of elementary, secondary, private/community-based, and lifetime achievement.

Throughout the district, Westerville students and staff have raised thousands of dollars, collected hundreds of donations to support families — and animals — in need. 

Jennifer Pugh, a second-grade teacher at Emerson Elementary; Kelly Balaz, a second-grade teacher at Hanby Elementary; and Elizabeth Hafner, a first-grade teacher at Whittier Elementary, have been named Westerville Education Foundation’s November Teachers of the Month.

Amid uncertainty in state funding, unexpected expenses and legislative changes, Westerville City School District has been able to stretch funds from a 5.9-mill levy voters approved in 2019 and delay deficit spending longer than originally anticipated. 

Since October, the inaugural members of Hawthorne Elementary’s Ruling Our Experiences (ROX) girls group have been gathering each week to explore topics to help them navigate relationships, experiences and decisions.

Westerville City Schools Special Education Department is hosting a family engagement forum from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Early Learning Center. 

Westerville City Schools' English Learner Department hosted its third parent meeting on Thursday, covering topics such as school closings in the event of inclement weather, All-Day kindergarten, special education and graduation requirements.

Throughout the week, students, teachers and staff across Westerville City Schools have celebrated Veterans Day by honoring those who served with school displays, recognition events and other activities. School staff at several buildings welcomed veterans and families connected to the military for school-wide assemblies and class visits on Friday.

Westerville community members interested in acquiring skills needed to help prevent suicide can participate in a virtual training hosted by Westerville City Schools, in partnership with the Westerville Education Challenge.

Westerville City School District (WCSD) Treasurer/CFO Nicole Marshall recently informed Board of Education members that her financial projections in November — where the district delayed entering deficit spending for at least one more fiscal year — have remained steady.
